Tour of the Itria Valley

Tour of the Itria Valley

Visit to the most beautiful and characteristic towns in the Itria Valley, Locorotondo, Ostuni and Martina Franca

Locorotondo is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, in the heart of Valle d’Itria. Its name reveals the round shape of the old town, made of small, sloping-roof houses called “Cummerse”. Locorotondo is the most beautiful balcony of the Murgia dei Trulli and from its “belvedere”, you can admire an extraordinary territory rich in vineyards, dry-stone walls, Mediterranean woods, olive tree groves, farms, and so many trulloes. The historic town is graceful and intimate, from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele along which there are the Municipal Building (now the city Library), the baroque Palazzo Morelli, and the Mother Church.

After, visit to Ostuni, perched on three hills and called “the White City” because of the peculiar white lime washed houses of the old town. Visit to the old town with its 15th-century, Romanesque and Gothic Cathedral, and Piazza Beato Giovanni Paolo II (“piazzetta Cattedrale”) where the 18th-century buildings of Palazzo Vescovile and of the old Seminary face each other.

Martina Franca is located on the eastern hills of Murgia; the name of the city partly refers to San Martino, who saved the inhabitants from the enemy invasions and to the period during which Philip of Anjou gave his subjects exemptions (in Italian “franchigia”) on taxes. In the old town, there are examples of Baroque architecture in the Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Martucci, Palazzo dell’Università, Palazzo Motolese, Palazzo Maggi, Palazzo Ancona and the magnificent Cathedral of San Martino with sculptures by Stefano da Putignano and Giuseppe Sammartino.
Visit to a
hypogeum mill dating back to the 1500s, where you can admire the machinery for the ancient production of extra virgin olive oil.

This tour includes means of transport car or minivan, English/Italian language guide, visit to a hypogeum mill, tasting and insurance RC. Departure guaranteed every day upon reservation.
